How much do solar panels cost?
Residential solar in 2025 costs $2.60–$3.80 per watt installed before incentives, meaning a typical 8 kW system runs $20,800–$30,400 gross. After the 30% federal Residential Clean Energy Credit, that drops to $14,500–$21,300. State rebates, utility incentives, and SRECs (in some states) can cut another 5–20%. System sizing basics
The right system covers 80–110% of your annual electricity use, sized off your average monthly kWh (on your utility bill). Rough math:
- Monthly kWh × 12 = annual kWh
- Annual kWh ÷ average annual production per kW in your ZIP = system size in kW
- Production ranges from ~1,100 kWh per kW/year in cloudy Seattle to ~1,650 kWh per kW/year in Phoenix
A house using 900 kWh/month (10,800/year) in Denver (~1,500 kWh/kW/year) needs about a 7.2 kW system.
Cost breakdown
- Panels — 25–35%. 400–450W monocrystalline panels (REC, LG, Panasonic, Q Cells) cost $0.65–$1.00/watt.
- Inverter — 10–15%. String inverter or microinverters (Enphase IQ8) $0.30–$0.50/watt.
- Racking, wiring, hardware — 8–12%.
- Labor and permitting — 15–25%.
- Sales, design, overhead — 20–30%. This is where installers vary most.
The biggest predictor of your final price isn't hardware — it's which installer you pick. National door-to-door companies quote 30–50% above regional installers for identical equipment.
Incentives that meaningfully lower cost
- Federal Residential Clean Energy Credit — 30% through 2032, dropping to 26% in 2033. Applies to system + install + battery.
- State income-tax credits — vary widely. NY offers 25% up to $5,000; SC 25%; OR $1,500 flat.
- State/utility rebates — Massachusetts SMART, Illinois Adjustable Block, California SGIP (battery), CT Green Bank.
- SRECs — Solar Renewable Energy Certificates traded in NJ, MA, PA, MD, DC, OH. Adds $500–$3,000/year in producing states.
- Property tax exclusion — 30+ states exclude solar from property assessments.
- Net metering — Full retail net metering (rooftop kWh worth the same as grid kWh) is being phased down. California NEM 3.0 pays about 25% of what NEM 2.0 did.
How to use the calculator
Enter your average monthly kWh usage (look on any electric bill), your average electricity rate ($/kWh, also on the bill), and your ZIP. The calculator sizes the system, applies your ZIP-based production factor, subtracts the 30% federal credit, and projects 25-year savings against your current rate escalated at 3%/year.
Payback period
Payback depends more on your electric rate than on the cost of solar. Rough 2025 numbers:
- California, Hawaii, MA, CT, NY (rates $0.28–$0.45/kWh): 5–7 year payback
- Northeast, Great Lakes, mid-Atlantic ($0.16–$0.22/kWh): 7–10 year payback
- South, Great Plains, mountain west ($0.10–$0.14/kWh): 10–14 year payback
- Louisiana, Idaho, Washington ($0.08–$0.11/kWh): 13–18 year payback
Systems produce for 25–30 years with modest degradation (~0.5%/year), so most systems produce 10–20 years of free electricity after payback.
Battery — worth adding?
Batteries (Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ 10) add $12,000–$20,000 installed. Federal 30% credit applies. Batteries make financial sense when:
- Time-of-use rates are steep (CA, HI, NY, MA)
- You have frequent grid outages (FL, TX, CA fire zones)
- Your utility no longer offers full net metering (CA NEM 3.0 essentially requires storage for reasonable payback)
Otherwise batteries are typically backup insurance, not a financial win.
Financing options
- Cash purchase — Best long-term return; qualifies for tax credit.
- Solar loan (10–20 years, 5–8% APR) — You still own the system and claim the credit; monthly payment often less than the electric bill it replaces.
- Solar lease / PPA — Third party owns the panels and takes the tax credit; you save 10–30% on electric bill but don't own the system, which complicates home sale.
Cash and loan almost always beat lease/PPA over 25 years. Avoid door-to-door lease pitches promising "free solar."
Choosing an installer
Get 3–5 quotes. Compare $/watt gross, panel/inverter warranties (25 years panels, 12–25 years inverter), and the installer's own workmanship warranty (10 years is standard, 25 is premium). Check state license, MCS/NABCEP certification, and BBB. Regional installers usually beat national companies on price.
What can disqualify your roof
- Shading — More than ~20% of the array in shade during peak sun (10 AM–3 PM) hurts production and complicates string design.
- Age of roof — If the roof is over 15 years old, replace it before installing. Removing and reinstalling panels for a re-roof later is $2,000–$5,000.
- Orientation — South is best; east/west is 80–90% of south output; north-facing rarely works in continental US.

Get at least three itemized quotes, verify licensing and insurance, and prioritize install quality over brand. The install crew matters more than the box on the truck — a mid-tier product installed well outperforms a premium product installed poorly.
