What landscaping cost calculator costs across Florida

Florida pricing is close to the U.S. average — expect standard pricing with modest metro-to-metro variation. Estimates on this page combine national cost baselines with BLS wage data and regional multipliers for the 331xx ZIP band. Enter your own ZIP above for a more precise local number.

Landscaping is the widest-ranging home improvement category to price because "landscaping" spans a $500 mulch refresh and a $150,000 whole-yard redesign. Getting a useful estimate means breaking the project into its component work types — softscape, hardscape, irrigation, and lighting — and understanding what actually drives cost within each.

Ballpark budgets by scope

Industry rule of thumb: budget 5–15% of home value for a comprehensive landscape plan. Under-investing (below 5%) tends to look temporary; over-investing rarely recovers at resale.

Softscape: what plants actually cost

Sod: $0.50–$1.50/sqft installed. Grass type matters — bermuda and zoysia (warm-season) are cheaper than fescue and rye (cool-season) in most markets.

Seed: $0.10–$0.30/sqft. Slower to establish (6–10 weeks) but 80% cheaper than sod. Best in spring or early fall.

Trees:

The instinct to buy larger trees is often wrong: a 15-gallon tree usually catches up to a 30-gallon in 3–5 years because smaller trees establish faster.

Shrubs: $30–$150 installed each depending on size. Foundation plantings typically need 10–20 shrubs.

Perennials and annuals: $8–$25 each. Mass plantings (25+ of the same variety) look much better than scattered singles.

Mulch: $30–$70/cubic yard installed. A 500-sqft bed at 3 inches deep needs about 5 cubic yards ($150–$350).

Hardscape: the expensive part

Hardscape is 40–70% of most redesign budgets:

Excavation and grading is the hidden cost. A patio project on level ground is 30–50% cheaper than the same patio on a sloped site that needs cut-and-fill.

Irrigation and drainage

Irrigation adds $2,500–$6,500 for a typical quarter-acre (see the sprinkler calculator for detail). Drainage issues — French drains, sump pumps, catch basins, grading — run $2,000–$8,000 and are often necessary before installing softscape. Solving drainage first prevents killing plants and rotting hardscape later.

Landscape lighting

Low-voltage LED landscape lighting has become almost mandatory on higher-end projects. Expect $150–$400 per fixture installed, with a typical front-yard system running 10–20 fixtures ($2,500–$8,000). Path lights, uplights on trees and architectural features, and downlights (moonlighting from tall trees) are the main techniques.

Design fees

For projects over $15,000, hiring a designer or landscape architect is worth it:

A good design pays for itself in avoided rework: the most expensive landscaping mistakes are re-doing hardscape or moving mature plants.

Regional cost differences

Phasing to spread cost

Full-yard redesigns can be phased over 2–3 years without visual awkwardness:

  1. Year 1: hardscape, irrigation, drainage, main trees. These are the "bones" and infrastructure.
  2. Year 2: shrubs, foundation plantings, lawn.
  3. Year 3: perennial beds, seasonal color, lighting.

Getting the hardscape and irrigation right first is essential; retrofitting these under mature plantings is 2–3× the original cost.

Getting an accurate quote

Ask two or three landscapers for scoped quotes on the same design, with line items for:

A quote without plant sizes and counts is impossible to compare fairly. Insist on that itemization before choosing.
